Ukrainian crisis may cause a “food disaster” in a number of countries, WFP expert says

Moscow, SANA- Eugenio Dacrema, an expert at the World Food Program (WFP), stressed that the repercussions of the Ukrainian crisis may cause a “food disaster” in a number of countries, especially in Asia and Africa.

“What is happening can be called a ‘food disaster. Countries such as Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Morocco, Iraq, Lebanon, Sudan, Yemen, African countries and Asian countries, will pay its consequences,” Dacrema was cited by Tass News Agency as saying.

He noted that the increase in grain prices was caused by increased global demand due to the reduced supply which resulted from the lower yields and lower Russian exports.

He stressed that the increase in fertilizer prices will reduce their use and, as a result, a decrease in the yield, which will lead to “a decrease in supply in the coming months.”

He added, “All this will primarily affect the most vulnerable countries, where the situation will worsen.”
