Al-Mina Mosque … a unique architectural designs in Lattakia

Lattakia, SANA- Al-Mina Mosque is distinguished from the other mosques by its unique architectural design in the world, in addition to its located on the waterfront in the Phoenician port offers it a special archaeological value and an important place in the heart of Lattakia’s citizens.

The mosque is small and distinguished with ancient golden stones, which were built 300 years ago, and it is considered the only one in the Islamic world because its door within the base of its minaret and the only one in Lattakia Governorate which is located on the second floor.

The mosque’s building dates back to the year 1161 AH, 1748 AD, and was built by Rais Hamouda bin Ibrahim, a Tunisian captain, as Director of Antiquities and Museums in Latakia, Ibrahim Khair Bey, told SANA.

Khair Bek pointed out that “ The mosque is located in an important historical area and it was built on the ruins of buildings dating back to the Phoenician period and then the Crusader period, and the fortifications underneath it dating back to the medieval period.”

The image of the mosque was printed on a postage stamp as part of a set of stamps issued by Syria’s most important historical and archaeological landmarks.

Director of Lattakia Endowments, Dr. Mahmoud Aliyu, said: It is the gateway for travelers coming to Lattakia province by sea, and it overlooks the waterfront in the Phoenician port, and it is still a popular destination for worshipers until now.

He added that the mosque is affected by the earthquake that hit Syria on 6th of February , 2023, it is still a destination for worshipers, and a center for practicing their religious rituals.
