Bike tour in Damascus to support SOS Children Villages

Damascus, SANA – A bike tour was carried out in Damascus City in a show of support for Syria’s SOS Children Villages, an offshoot of the international organization concerned with looking after orphaned children.

Mezzeh highway and its bystreets were the main track for the participants in the tour, which lasted for 40 minutes.

Bike riding has been encouraged recently within an initiative that first started unofficially almost a year ago by a team of young volunteers.

Tens to hundreds of participants usually take part in the activities of the initiative, which were being recently carried out officially after the initiative was embraced by the Syrian Enterprise and Business Center (SEBC).

The bike tour’s organizer of Maen al-Hemmeh told SANA that the goal of Mezzeh event is two-fold, explaining that it aims, on the one hand, at encouraging bike riding as an inter-city transportation means to reduce the growing heavy traffic burden.

On the other hand, al-Hemmeh said, the event has a social goal to give the revenues of the bike tour to the SOS association.

He noted that there has been an increase in the number of people of different ages volunteering in the initiative. Mezzeh tour included 2000 people, recording an increase of 150 new participants.
