Russian, Belarusian, Armenian embassies celebrate 70th anniversary of victory over Nazism

Damascus, SANA – Marking the 70th anniversary of the victory over Nazism, the embassies of Russia, Belarus, and Armenia in Damascus organized a reception on Saturday at Dama Rose Hotel.

The event was attended by Vice President Najah al-Attar, Speaker of the People’s Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Lahham, and several ministers, diplomats, and economic, religious, social, and media figures.

In a speech at the reception, Armenian Ambassador in Damascus Arshak Poladian said that on this day 70 years ago, the fate and future of humanity was decided in Berlin when Nazi Germany and its allies surrendered following a grueling war in which the Soviet army and the allies managed to put an end to the Nazi war machine.

Poladian said that history has not witnessed anything like the Great Patriotic War in terms of victims, geography, and military operations on several fronts, and that the Soviet Union prevented the Axis powers from spreading their influence around the world.

He noted that today, new fascist trends are surfacing under support from various sides, with one such aspect of fascism appearing in the Middle East in the form of the Takfiri mentality, a threat which Syria is currently confronting.

In a press statement on the sideline of the event, Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad said that some Western countries that fought against Nazism and fascism in the past have behaved in an unbelievably fascist way, and that Syrians are now fighting a terrorist mentality quite similar to fascism and Nazism, stressing that the crimes of terrorists against the Syrian people are no less heinous than the crimes committed by Nazis.

Mikdad also criticized the attempts by the United States and Western country to install themselves as the sole representative of international law when in fact they are hijacking other people’s rights and violating human rights around the world.
