More groups joining expatriate campaign for supporting the Syrian pound

Damascus, SANA – More NGO’s and groups are joining “The Syrian Phoenix” expatriate campaign for supporting the Syrian pound (Lira)-referred to as SYP- in the face of the economic war waged against the homeland.

The US-based “Mother Syria at Home and Abroad” group has recently joined the campaign, which depends on the expatriates buying Syrian currency or depositing US dollar into banks in Syria.

Yassmin Ahmad, children activities coordinator at the group told SANA that the group has deposited USD 5,000 into the Central Bank of Syria (CBS), noting that there will be more deposits by the group’s members who are visiting Syria in the coming few months.

The group was founded in 2012 by a number of Syrian expatriates living in the USA. It provides social, financial, medical and humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people at home.

“The Syrian Phoenix” campaign, which was launched on Friday and continues for several days, has witnessed a high turnout by Syrian expatriates. It will be followed by weekly intervention campaigns in line with the laws of the countries of residence.

The CBS and other authorities concerned at home have been injecting large quantities of foreign currency in the local markets, particularly USD whose price has soared to unprecedented levels in the past months.
