Lavrov: Any attempts to thwart political process in Syria will be doomed

Moscow, SANA-Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov affirmed on Wednesday that any attempts to thwart the efforts of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) to resolve the crisis in Syria and combat terrorism will fail.

In a joint press statement with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma in Moscow, Lavrov said that interaction on the anti-terror front within the ISSG which is still developing incrementally despite difficulties will start bringing results , adding that those who trying to thwart the political efforts will not prevail because “the positive trend in Syria is obvious.”

“We were able to defeat the terrorist threat, implement the cessation of hostilities and deliver humanitarian aid,” he added, pointing out that there are some groups that have to be excluded from the cessation of hostilities agreement and should be included in the list of terrorist groups.

Lavrov said that launching the political process in Syria is important, adding that there are attempts to undermine this process but Russia will face these attempts insistently and consistently.

He noted that Russia’s Western partners began to enhance their understanding of the need to reach a political solution to the crisis in Syria, indicating that it is not possible to blow up this process to meet the “geopolitical selfish purposes” of some parties.

He considered that the implementation of what has been agreed on Syria would lead to positive results in neighboring states.

The Russian Minister pointed out that sending the Russian Aerospace forces to Syria in response to a request from the Syrian side contributed to preserve the Syrian institutions.

Russian Foreign Ministry: The position of Riyadh opposition delegation in Geneva indicates their lack of real ideas for settlement

The Russian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday stressed that the position of the “Riyadh opposition” delegation to the Syrian-Syrian dialogue in Geneva indicates their lack of real ideas for settlement, noting that the delegation showed a low level in the talks on the crisis in Syria.

Commenting on the decision of the delegation of Riyadh opposition to suspend participation in Geneva talks, the Russian ministry said in a statement that the Syrian talks should not become means to blackmail the international community.

Once again, the “Riyadh opposition” delegation proves that its allegations to monopolize the representation of the entire Syrian opposition are fragile and cannot help reach a political settlement to the crisis in Syria.

It added that the delegation’s irresponsible approach lays doubt on the progress achieved to put an end to the bloodshed in Syria which has been achieved through great collective efforts exerted by  the International Syria Support Group, topped by Russia and the US.

” It turns out that certain opposition forces and those external forces which are their sponsors are continuing to rely exclusively on achieving their own plans and clearly inflated ambitions, acting on the principle ‘all or nothing’, the ministry noted.

The statement underlined the importance of full commitment to the UN Security Council resolution No. 2254 and other resolutions issued by the International Syria Support Group which provide for wider opposition representation in the intra-Syrian talks and the political process, calling for sincere efforts to deal with  all these opposition groups on an equal footing with the “Riyadh opposition” delegation.

The statement added that Moscow is committed to the decision of the International Syrian Support Group and the UN Security Council that all issues of concern to the Syrian side should be discussed in a comprehensive Syrian- Syrian talks either mediated or direct.

“The Geneva forum should be a ‘workshop’ for agreeing on the outlines of Syria’s future secular statehood and for determining the ways of reaching that, but not an ‘eastern bazaar’ with elements of crude blackmail in respect of the international community,” the ministry said in its statement.

“By issuing ultimatums, the Riyadh group, it seems, is trying to mask the fact it has no concrete and realistic proposals to settle the crisis in Syria through political means,” the statement added.

The ministry reiterated its support to the decision of Staffan de Mistura, the United Nations envoy to Syria, to carry on with the negotiations in Geneva.
