Moscow: OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism in Syria failed to conduct objective investigation

Moscow, SANA- Russia’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that the OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism in Syria failed to conduct an objective investigation and all attempts to revive it will be in vain.

Zakharova made her remarks during a press conference in Moscow on Thursday.

She added that the OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism, over more than two years,  could not provide the necessary professional capability and technical tools to conduct an objective investigation on the use of chemical weapons in Syria, and it has lost the ability to endure the unprecedented political pressure by the US and its  western partners.

The Russian diplomat noted that in the current stage there is a possibility to establish a new commission that will adhere to the rules and procedures provided by the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons agreement and all relevant documents.

She added that this requires dispatching experts to visit sites to be investigated, ensure the safety of proofs and correct errors committed by the previous commission and conduct additional unbiased investigations.

Zakharova expressed astonishment over US statements about keeping its forces in Syria, stressing that the presence of these forces is illegitimate.
