UNDP: Protection of Syrian heritage is the world’s responsibility

Damascus, SANA-Representative at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Akiko Suzaki said that protecting and saving the Syrian heritage is an international responsibility which the UNDP considers a key objective for the program in cooperation with the Syrian government.

Suzaki made her remarks during a seminar held at the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums (DGAM) in Damascus on Thursday.

Suzaki considered that the protection of the Syrian heritage is the responsibility of the world as it is the heritage of all humanity.

She pointed out the support provided by United Nation to Syria in the antiquities protection field through forming work groups to assess the damage caused to antiquities and find means aimed at repairing and restoring them, mainly in the cities of Homs, Old Aleppo and Palmyra.

For his part, Director General of Antiquities and Museums, Mahmoud Hammoud highlighted the destruction, theft and smuggling caused to Syrian antiquities and museums by terrorists supported by some countries and external parties, stressing the need for cooperation in order to regain and protect the Syrian heritage in cooperation with parties concerned.
