Turkish party: Erdogan’s Government turns Turkey into a police state

Ankara, SANA- Deputy chairman of Republican People’s Party in Turkey Sezgin Tanrikulu affirmed that torture and abuse practices persist in the country in light of the Development and Justice party’s role, referring to the government’s decision to ban peaceful and popular protests.

Birgun newspaper quoted Tanrikulu as saying in a statement on a human rights report “The Turkish employee who violates the rights will not be punished,” adding that torture which was practiced in prisons during the last decade of the 20th century is practiced now under the role of the Development and Justice party.

He said 145 citizens were sentenced in the framework of articles that limit freedom of expression.

A report on the human rights in Turkey has revealed that 21 Turkish citizens have died in attacks by Turkish security forces on peaceful demonstrations during 2014, while other 502 were wounded and nearly 3 thousands were arrested.

The Development and Justice party government submitted a draft law to the Turkish parliament in mid-October that gives police wide authorities to storm houses and frisk them without getting a verdict from the court, a step described by members of the parliament as “turning Turkey into a police state.”
