Sabbagh discusses with Vershinin and Francis challenges facing Syria

New York, SANA- Head of Syrian delegation to 78th session of UN General Assembly, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh discussed with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Vershinin means of boosting the strategic relations binding the two friendly countries and the importance of coordination on various issues, especially developments related to the situation in Syria.

Both sides stressed the necessity of respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and the withdrawal of foreign forces present in Syria illegally.

Sabbagh underlined the importance of continuing to combat against terrorism until eliminating it completely and the immediate lifting of unilateral measures imposed on Syria, stressing the importance of the meetings held in the Astana format to achieve stability and security in Syria.

In a related context, Sabbagh met with the President of the 78th session of the General Assembly, Dennis Francis, and congratulated him for assuming the presidency.

Sabbagh expressed Syria’s readiness to coordinate and cooperate with Dennis Francis on all issues related to his mandate.

He explained the challenges that Syria faces with respect to achieving the sustainable development goals, fundamentally represented in the remaining terrorist hotspots and the catastrophic effects resulting from the continued illegal foreign presence in Syrian territory and illegal unilateral coercive measures.

In turn, Francis affirmed continued work and coordination with delegations of all member states, looking forwards to work closely with the Syrian side on issues listed on the agenda session, underscoring the importance of respecting UN Charter and principles of international law.
