Syria participates in the 2nd Global Refugee Forum in Geneva

Geneva, SANA- With the participation of Syria, the activities of the 2nd Global Refugee Forum kicked off in the Swiss city of Geneva, which will continue until the 15th of December.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates ,Bassam Sabbagh, headed the Syrian delegation .

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi pointed out in his opening speech before the forum that there are 114 million refugees and internally displaced people around the world, pointing out that almost every refugee seeks to return to their homeland.

Grandi warned of a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza Strip, adding: The Security Council’s inability in this regard leads us to expect more deaths and suffering among civilians, reiterating that the UN Secretary-General’s call for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire for humanitarian purposes.

Many humanitarian organizations confront severe financing challenges, including the Commission, which lacks $400 million, noting that holding the forum comes at the suitable time to guarantee the required response to displacement, he said.

The forum is considered the largest international gathering on refugees, and aims to enhance the implementation of the goals of the Global Compact on Refugees, including supporting countries of origin to facilitate the return of refugees to them.
