Chinese scientists identify gene that may help protect against obesity

Beijing, SANA- Chinese researchers have discovered a specific gene that may enhance resilience to obesity, potentially illuminating the complex mechanisms behind the major global health issue.

According to Chinese media, a new study conducted by Professor Jin Li and Assistant Professor Zheng Hongxiang of Fudan University showed that genetics might also play an important role in how some people avoid obesity.

Scientists found through this study a type of mitochondrial DNA called mtDNA, which is common in southern China and Southeast Asia, may help protect against obesity.

Professor Li said that this nuclear DNA, could help us better understand how genes influence obesity and may also lead to new ways to treat and prevent this condition.

According to the World Health Organization, more than a billion people in the world were obese in 2022, noting that obesity is a major health problem worldwide because it is linked to risks such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
