Syria, FAO discuss developing agricultural cooperation

Damascus, SANA – Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform Eng. Ahmad al-Qadri said work with FAO will focus on promoting future cooperation between both sides through setting joint programs targeting agricultural sector in Syria to achieve positive outcomes.

During a meeting with UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Assistant Director-General for North Africa and the Near East Abdel-Salam Ould Ahmed on Sunday, al-Qadiri added that the deep- rooted cooperation with FAO has positive effects on the agricultural sector in Syria as the organization has offered financial and technical support to the Syrian peasants and agricultural institutions.

Both sides discussed means of developing and promoting agricultural cooperation.

Emphasizing the necessity of the persistence of the remarkable relation with Syria, Ould Ahmad said “we will work together to consider the situation of the agricultural sector in Syria, the impact of the current crisis on it, and set future plans to support the agricultural sector and peasants in the country.

For her part, FAO Representative in Syria Eriko Hibi pointed out that cooperation between the international organization and Syria includes several governmental and non-governmental bodies with the aim of supporting small producers and peasants, especially in light of the current situation.

Supporting local communities is within the policy of FAO to improve the living conditions of the inhabitants, Hibi asserted, adding that Ould Ahmad’s visit will open new prospects in the joint work between the FAO and Syria.
