Abdullahian: We hope all parties take important steps to support Syrian dialogue

Tehran, SANA – Iranian Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hussein Amir Abdullahian reiterated on Tuesday his country’s support to the efforts of UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura and the political track for solving the crisis in Syria.

“Tehran is happy to see that we are approaching a political solution to this crisis,” said Abdullahian, speaking to reporters after his meeting with de Mistura in Tehran.

He expressed Tehran’s hope that all regional and international parties will take basic and important steps to support the fight against terrorism and the political talks in Syria and refrain from actions that do not serve Syria and its people.

Abdullahian said the intra-Syrian talks between the Syrian government and opposition groups have entered a new phase.

“We had important talks with the UN envoy about the continuation of the political course in Syria,” the Iranian official was quoted as saying.

“One of our main concerns in Syria is the increasing activities of armed groups in recent days and the increase in breaches of the ceasefire that can harm the political process,” he added.

Abdullahian pointed out that it was stressed during talks with de Mistura on not involving the terrorist organizations in the Syrian talks, adding that the list of terrorist organizations is one of still unclear issues.

For his part, de Mistura said that the talks he held with the Iranian officials emphasized putting an end to the war in Syria, sending humanitarian aid, and continuing along the political track to resolve the crisis, noting that these talks are part of the preparations for the upcoming Geneva talks.

He stressed the importance of holding consultations with Iranian officials because their ideas and recommendations are effective and useful.
