Water Resources Ministry, FAO discuss enhancing cooperation

Damascus, SANA – Minister of Water Resources Kamal al-Sheikha discussed on Monday with resident representative of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Syria Eriko Hibi means to enhance cooperation between the two sides, mainly in the programs and the projects that will contribute to achieving food security.

In the meeting, which included the joint mission team to assess the crops and the needs of the agricultural sector and food security currently visiting Syria, al-Sheikha reviewed the challenges facing the irrigation sector that adversely affect agricultural production, including the targeting of infrastructure, canals, and irrigation networks, theft of equipment, the lack of rain, and the decline in water levels in dams.

The Minister presented a number of projects that contribute to the promotion of agricultural production, including the rehabilitation of treatment stations in Damascus and Aleppo, where the two projects will offer a non-traditional source of irrigation water, as well as the rehabilitation project for Maskana network to the west of al-Safira area which will help in securing water for the city of Aleppo, and the maintenance project for the irrigation networks in al-Assi.

In turn, Hibi expressed readiness to support the plans and the projects of the Ministry that contribute to promoting food security, stressing the need to rely on information and accurate data to determine needs and secure requirements.
