Damascus, SANA – The Syrian Family Planning Association (SFPA), in cooperation with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), launched on Sunday a 16-day campaign for “Ending Violence against Women” in a cultural event at its clinic in al-Halbouni area in Damascus.
The event focused on the necessity of supporting and empowering women, particularly in the educational sector, and on society building and economic development.
Representatives of local associations and women from the local community participated in the event. A film demonstrating different forms and aspects of violence against women and its effects on the family and society was screened, in addition to lectures on women, education, law and the impact of violence on the family.
In his speech at the event, Mohammad al-Deirani, Head of the SFPA, pointed out that the campaign aims at raising awareness on gender-based violence as being a human rights issue and affirming gender equality.
In the southern province of Daraa, the SFPA branch in the province launched similar activities within the campaign’s program.
Director of the SFPA branch Dr. Abdul-Rahim Barmo said the activities in the province will be implemented through the SFPA clinics in the neighborhoods of al-Kashif, al-Qussour and al-Dahia in Daraa city, adding that the activities include awareness-raising sessions through presenting films, plays and dialogues about violence against women issues.
