More Syrian officials offer condolences over death of Rafsanjani at Iranian Embassy

Damascus, SANA – A number of Syrian officials offered on Wednesday condolences on the death of Iran’s Former President and Head of the Expediency Council Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani at the Iranian Embassy in Damascus.

Information Minister Mohammad Ramez Tourjman, Presidential Political and Media Advisor Bouthaina Shaaban, Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad, Syria’s Permanent Representative at the UN Bashar al-Jaafari, Grand Mufti of the Republic Ahmad Badreddiin Hassoun, and Deputy Chairman of the National Progressive Front Omran al-Zoubi offered their condolences and wrote an entry in the record of condolences.

Representatives of political parties, People’s Assembly members, Damascus and Damascus Countryside Governors, directors of state establishments, religious figures, and other popular and civil figures and members of the diplomatic corps in Damascus also visited the Embassy to offer condolences.

In statements, Tourjman said that Rafsanjani was one of the main defenders of the Palestinian cause and of the resistance axis, while Shaaban said that the passing of Rafsanjani is a great loss for those who fight against colonialism and injustice.

For his part, Mikdad said that Rafsanjani rendered great services to the Iranian people and to Syria, and al-Jaafari said that his passing is a loss for Syria, not just Iran, while Hassoun said that the Syrian people will not forget Rafsanjani’s positions and support for the Syrian state.

The Iranian government announced three days of national mourning in honor of Ayatollah Rafsanjani, who died of a heart attack on Sunday at the age of 83.
