DGAM, UNESCO discuss reconstruction and revival of historic cities

Damascus, SANA – Directorate-General for Antiquities and Museums (DGAM) and the Syrian National Commission for UNESCO in Damascus organized a workshop under the title “Reconstruction and Revival of Historic Cities Post-Crises.”

The two-day workshop which kicked off on Tuesday aims at exchanging expertise and benefitting from the lessons learned to reconsider the current archeological state in Syria and set the foundations for a detailed approach for reconstruction and building after the crises.

DGAM Director Nazir Awad said that the workshop features the best experts and seeks to learn about the Lebanese experience in the field of reconstruction and management of historic cities after wars and disasters, with the participation of representatives of the Ministries of Awqaf (Religious Endowments) and Tourism, the Faculty of Architecture at Damascus University, and the UNESCO Regional Office in Beirut.

For his part, Secretary of the Syrian National UNESCO Committee Nidal Hassan pointed out to the cooperation between the committee and state establishments in this regard with UNESCO and its regional offices, and the importance of this cooperation in the current phase, affirming the commitment of UNESCO to helping the Syrian national teams to carry out their professional duties according the international standards in this regard.

A brief document will be published during the workshop which will be based on the experts’ presentations and the results of the various seminars, which will serve as a guide to good practices adopted by the specialists.
