Bogdanov: Political track must be continued to reach a solution in Syria

Cairo, SANA – Russian President’s Special Envoy for the Middle East, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov stressed the need to continue work on the political track concerning the crisis in Syria so as to reach a “compromise” solution to it.

Bogdanov’s remarks followed talks he held with Foreign Minister of Egypt Sameh Shukri in the Egyptian capital Cairo on Saturday.

Russia, Bogdanov stressed, rejects any talk on a “regime change” in Syria and is committed to the Geneva Communiqué of June 30, 2012 that provides for finding a political solution to the crisis in the country.

“Given that everybody agreed on the communiqué, work must continue to complete this track politically,” said Bogdanov, affirming that a comprehensive national Syrian-Syrian dialogue should involve the Syrian government and the “opposition”.

In his comments on Turkey’s push for setting up a buffer zone in its border with Syria, the Russian diplomat said this issue can be discussed at the Security Council with everybody’s participation, including that of the country concerned.

Bogdanov, in his response to a question on the calls for ground intervention in the framework of the war against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), stressed Russia’s constant support for respecting the international legitimacy and abidance by the UN Charter to preserve security in the countries, affirming that so is the case for Egypt, Syria and Iraq.

As far as all these issues are concerned, Russia is ready to hold discussions with the European, Western, Arab and Turkish partners and take part in joint efforts on the ground of respecting the countries’ sovereignty and international conventions, said Bogdanov.

He indicated a “solid” Russian-Egyptian coordination with regard to the issues of the region.
