Velayati, De Mistura: Solution to the crisis in Syria political

Tehran, SANA-Ali Akbar Velayati, advisor to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran called on Syria’s neighboring countries, particularly Turkey, to seek a political resolution to the crisis in Syria and to not interfere in the states’ domestic affairs.

“What is going on in Syria is an unusual matter and unprecedented in its history because Syria, as an independent state, is coming under a foreign attack and its sovereignty is violated,” Velayati said during a meeting with the UN envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura.

He called for ending the crisis in Syria and searching for a political resolution as the continuation of the dilemma there damages the whole region, affirming that Iran and some other countries believe in apolitical solution to the crisis.

Velayati made little of the international coalition against the Islamic state in Iraq and Syria terrorist organization, saying that those who claim they fight this organization have been supporting it.

De Mistura, for his part, called for speeding up efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria, saying “we shouldn’t waste the opportunity because many conferences have been held to settle the crisis in Syria, but they didn’t give fruits.”

He pointed out to 4 million refugees who need aid, so “we have to concentrate on settling the situation and find a political solution to the crisis in Syria.”
