Greek Patriarch: Terrorist threats in Syria and Iraq process of eradication of civilizations and religions

Vienna, SANA – Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I warned against the risks of the terrorist threats witnessed by Syria and Iraq.

“What is going on in Syria and Iraq is a process of eradication of the roots of civilizations and the cradle of religions,” Austrian Der Standard newspaper quoted Patriarch Bartholomew as saying in a statement on Saturday.

The newspaper said that the terrorist organizations, including the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and Jabhat al-Nusra killed civilians from all components of the Syrian and Iraqi societies and destroyed their countries, asserting that terrorists killed both the Christians and the Muslims and expelled them from their homes.

In a meeting with some clergymen in Areas Adjacent to the Syrian-Turkish border s, the newspaper pointed out that the Apostle Paul toured Syria and spread the teachings of Christianity in it, asserting that the Syrians were the first to be preached .

The daily indicated that the ISIS and al-Nusra’s terrorists destroyed religions and civilizations and displaced peoples of the region who were, throughout ages, exposed to acts of killing, displacement and genocide at the hands the Tatars and Mongols and Ottomans, particularly the Armenians and the Greek Orthodox .
