Environment Ministry, UNICEF sign joint cooperation framework

Damascus, SANA- Ministry of State for Environment Affairs and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Tuesday signed a joint cooperation framework on raising environmental awareness of the adolescent.

UNICEF cooperation with the Ministry supports the Ministry’s work in the field of spreading awareness and environmental sanitation and enhances the community’s participation to guarantee raising this awareness in order to achieve a healthy environment for children and adolescent, Minister of State for Environment Affairs Nazira Sarkis said.

The cooperation framework stipulates for the implementation of a number of activities enrolled in the framework of the Global Hand Washing Day (GHD), following up implementation of the ordinary program of raising the environment awareness of adolescent through environmental hubs and camps and cooperating with other associations.

It also stipulates for the formation of a joint team for following up the phases of carrying out activities laid down in the joint work framework and providing technical support to the environmental media production unit at the Ministry.

The Ministry’s technical cadres will hold activities to raise the awareness and enhance the participation of the local community in the assessment of the water quality and safety in line with the needs of improving the public health and environmental safety, Sarkis added.

For her part, UNICEF resident representative in Syria Hanaa Sinjer stressed the necessity of preparing an executive plan on setting the work mechanism and tools in addition to the needed financial and human resources and the time framework according to the scheduled activities.

The framework will be put into effect as of Wednesday 13 May till the end of the current year.

Last February, the Ministry and UNICEF agreed to implement several future projects with the view of enhancing school students’ engagement in improving sanitary and environment situation.
