Meeting chair and members of the European Affairs Committee at the Czech Parliament, Hassan said Syria is fighting foreign-backed terrorism and is subject to an unfair economic blockade which is weighing heavily on the Syrian people, urging the chairman and members to assist in the push to lift the blockade.

“The West’s faulty policies vis-à-vis the Middle East, particularly Syria, have triggered displacement and exodus…That’s why Syria is hoping that pressure will be brought to bear on some Western states which are arming terrorist organizations,” he said.

Ondrej Benesik, chair of the Czech Parliament’s European Affairs Committee said the Czech Republic has never been indifferent to the crisis in Syria and has kept its embassy in Damascus open, expressing his country’s support for a political settlement in Syria.

The non-radicalized parties in Syria and the region, he stressed, should work to “find a common discourse”, adding he believes the EU can assist in the dialogue process.

Asked about European pressure on Turkey to halt the flow of arms and terrorists into Syria, Benesik said the issue is in negotiation with Turkey which he said “is being repeatedly interrogated about information and doubts on the matter.”

The delegation also held economic talks with Vice-Chair of the Czech Economic Chamber which the latter described as “cordial, candid and fruitful,” hoping that situation in Syria will improve and the two sides will jump-start broad-based economic cooperation as befits a long-standing tradition of close bilateral cooperation.
