Iran and Greece declare their airspace open for Russian planes carrying humanitarian aid to Syria

Tehran- Athens, SANA – Sources at the Russian embassies in Tehran and Athens said Iran and Greece have allowed Russian planes carrying humanitarian aid to Syria to use their airspace.

A source at the Russian Embassy in Tehran said the embassy received permission for all requests for Russian planes carrying humanitarian aid to Syria to pass through Iran’s airspace, and that the embassy is has direct and constant coordination with the Iranian government regarding this matter.

In the same context, a source at the Russian Embassy in Athens said that the embassy received permits approving the use of Greece’s airspace by the Russian planes, and that this was accompanied by a memo from the Greek Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Earlier on Sunday, A Greek diplomatic source said that Greek authorities refused a U.S. demand to bar these Russian planes from using the country’s airspace.

Spokesman for Russia’s President Dmitry Peskov announced on Wednesday that it is possible to deliver Russian humanitarian aid to Syria via an alternative route other than the Bulgarian path.

In press statements, Peskov said that Russian Foreign Ministry had announced the existence of alternative routes for delivering humanitarian aid for Syria which Russia intends to use them.
