Health Minister calls for enhancing cooperation with WHO

Geneva, SANA-Health Minister Nizar Yazigi affirmed on Monday the importance of enhancing coordination between the ministry and the World Health Organization (WHO) through activating joint programs to meet the increasing health needs in Syria in light of the current circumstances in the country.

During a meeting in Geneva with Dr. Alaa Alwan, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean region, Yazigi pointed to the need to support the ministry’s efforts in establishing a hospital for patients with tumors and providing it with equipment and required medicines and expanding the existing tumors department which is located in one of the Ministry’s hospitals to alleviate the burdens faced by patients and medical staff.

The minister pointed to the possibility of cooperation in the field of meeting the needs of patients with chronic diseases, especially diabetes patients and providing specific medicines which are not produced domestically.

In turn, Alwan affirmed the organization’s keenness to meet the health needs of the residents and those who are affected by the crisis, hailing the efforts of the Syrian Health Ministry to meet the health needs of the Syrian citizens.

The meeting came on the sidelines of the 69th session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) which kicked off today.
