De Mistura calls for resuming talks on settling crisis in Syria

Geneva, SANA – UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura affirmed on Tuesday the need to continue the talks on the settlement of the crisis in Syria.

TASS Russian news agency quoted de Mistura as saying that the elements for continuing the talks are still available, and that the talks should focus on the humanitarian side.

De Mistura expressed his lack of confidence in the effectiveness of coercive unilateral economic measures imposed on Syria, which have caused suffering to the Syrian people, calling at the same time for not counting on a “leap” in Syria after the next US presidential election.

He also stressed the need to involve the Syrian Kurds in the talks and to have them participate in the discussion of the future of their country, but they have to avoid talking about federalism.
